It would not be an exaggeration to claim that restauranteur Sami Othman was reared in a deli. From the age of ten, he worked alongside his father at a family-owned deli in New York. He was a quick study and a hard worker who earned enough money to launch his own deli at the age of 16 in 1977. His father gave him the land for his deli. His father had closed a real estate office on the site. Sami named his first restaurant Aziz O Deli after his father.
Sami was able to open many additional delis on Long Island, New York, six months later. In 1982, a trip to California altered his life. He fell in love with Los Angeles' promise and decided to sell all of his delis in New York, except for two that he gifted to his brothers. He opened his first California deli in Pasadena. Other delis soon followed, including one in South Central Los Angeles.
In 2015, Orleans & York Deli was named the #1 Cajun & Creole Restaurant in Los Angeles by Trip Advisor, and its Po Boy Sandwiches.
